The exhibit includes both traditional and contemporary works from artists living throughout the state. All mediums, with the exception of porcelain and photography, are accepted into the show. Hoosier Salon judges award thousands of dollars in prizes to artists each year. Portions of the show travel to various exhibits, including the Brookston Art Canter, around the state following the completion of the exhibition at the Indiana State Museum.

The Hoosier Salon began in 1925 when the Daughters of Indiana opened the doors to the first exhibition of Indiana artists at the Marshall Field and Co. galleries in Chicago. They named their show after the famous French salons of the 19th century, the women were eager to prove that Indiana artists deserved national recognition. Critics and the public alike applauded the high quality of the art, making the first exhibition a huge success. The Hoosier Salon show was moved to Indianapolis in 1941 and was first exhibited at the Indiana State Museum in 1990.
